Influenza antigen test is used to diagnose influenza infection or flu as well as identify different strains of the influenza virus causing the infection. It is also known as the flu test or rapid influenza diagnostic test or rapid flu test.
When it’s done:
The test is performed when there is a need to:
- Diagnose influenza infection
- Develop a treatment plan
- Determine whether the flu has spread to the community
- Determine whether the symptoms are due to the influenza virus or due to other causes
- The test is also recommended in high-risk or hospitalised patients who are suspected of having flu and in patients showing symptoms such as headaches, fever, chills, muscle pain and weakness, sore throat, cough, diarrhoea and vomiting.
When to Avoid:
There is no specific condition when this test should be avoided.
How to prepare:
No special preparation is required.
