Lab Test and Medical Investigation

Overview:

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test is a simple, economical blood test that helps detect inflammation in the body due to conditions such as infections, cancers or autoimmune disorders. It is also used to diagnose or monitor the progress of the inflammatory disease. To perform this test, blood is drawn from a vein in the arm. It is not a confirmatory test.

When it’s done:

The test is performed in conditions such as:

  • Unexplained fever
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle syptoms
  • Suspected inflammatory diseases or cancer
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Bone infections

When to Avoid:

Consult your physician if you are taking some medications, because certain medicines may affect the test results.

How to prepare:

There is no special preparation for the test.
