Is a Brain Tumour Curable?
Brain tumour occurs when the brain cells grow abnormally. It applies pressure on the surrounding areas causing symptoms such as headache. Complete cure of Brain Tumour is very tricky and it also depends on the location, the degree to which it has affected other parts of brain and the size of the tumour.
Grade I brain tumours may be cured if they are completely removed by surgery, while Grade II — Tumour cells grow and spread more slowly than Grade III and IV Tumour cells. They may spread into nearby tissue and may reappear. Grade IV Tumours usually cannot be cured.
Your care plan might also include the treatment for symptoms and side effects – an essential part of your medical care.
Treatment options and recommendations depend on numerous factors like:
- The size, type, and grade of the tumour
- Patient’s preferences and overall health
- Possible side effects
- If the tumour has spread to other parts of the CNS or body
- Whether the tumour is putting pressure on vital parts of the brain
Brain tumours are removed surgically or with the help of radiotherapy. Craniotomy is one of the surgically techniques used to remove whole or part of the brain tumour. It is an open brain surgery. But with minimally invasive surgery, surgeons can now perform brain tumour extraction surgeries through much advanced and less invasive procedures. Radiation therapy or radiosurgery is also a common brain tumour removal procedure adopted by doctors across the world.
