After comfortably being seated in a Boeing 777, the first piece of information all flight passengers are given is that on air safety. Because safety, is their first priority. Healthcare is no different. Data suggests that medical errors remain as the third largest cause of death in hospitals in the United States. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/study_suggests_medical_errors_now_third_leading_cause_of_death_in_the_us
Education of patients and their families concerning their diseases has been an inherent component of healthcare provision. Multitude of errors can be eliminated in a hospital by ensuring a strong patient family education. It helps patients better participate in their care and make informed care decisions. Education to patients includes not only providing general information about the patient’s disease/health condition, its causes, consequences, but also being informed on how to get help from health professionals.
It is important to recognize the need for an educational process through participation and involvement to strengthen patient’s decision making in the care process. Also, the role of the family in the care process and improve recovery is critical. Strong education improves the family’s ability to cope with the patient’s health status, prognosis and outcome.
Making our hospitals an error free zone remains to be the foundation of Healthcare delivery. There is no better way in achieving that, than by creating a strong bond with the patient and their family through good education.
As they say, the building stands tall when the foundation is strong. And in Healthcare, it all starts with partnering with your patients!
