6 Ways to Gain an Inner Peace of Mind

Is your mind always busy worrying about more or less important things going on in your life? Do you feel like when you finally find a moment of peace, something always happens to drain you of your positive energy? Is stress taking over your life? As society keeps evolving (or sinking, some may say) and becoming more complex, gaining inner peace, even for a short while, becomes a more and more difficult quest – but not an impossible one.

Here are 6 ways to help you let go of the negative aspects of your life, quiet your worries, and find your peace.

  1. Meditate

Everywhere you turn, you hear and read about meditation and how great it can be for all aspects of your life. If you’re not already practicing it, you may even be tired of all the hype surrounding meditation, but bear with me. Take a few minutes out of your day to just try it out and see how it can turn things around for you! Even meditating for just 10-20 minutes every day can help you gain inner peace. Simply choose a quiet place, sit or lie down, close your eyes and try to focus on your breathing and clear your mind of any thoughts.

  1. Focus on Sounds

Whenever you feel overwhelmed, close your eyes and listen carefully to the sounds around you. Focus on all details and try to detect where the sounds are coming from and what they might mean. Maybe you hear children laughing. Imagine what might be amusing them. Maybe you here a bird singing. Is it a mother letting her babies know she brought food? Maybe it’s just the wind blowing. How many people has it passed by and what stories does it carry? Focusing your attention on whatever you hear and trying to create a story behind it will allow your mind to take a break from whatever is bothering you.

  1. Bring Acceptance into Your Life

You have to understand that there’s only so much you can control in your life. What you cannot change should be of no concern to you. Why linger on things you have absolutely no control over? Once you start accepting what is as it is, once you stop judging a situation, a behaviour, or a person, you will find true relief. Things may change outside of you, or stay as rough as they were – what’s important is what happens inside you, and that’s what you can influence. Acceptance is the key to inner peace.

  1. Live in the Present

Yes, this is the ultimate cliché, but it’s true. And yet many keep ignoring it and obsess over things in their past or constantly worry about the future. There’s no point in tormenting yourself about something that has already happened and that you cannot change, and there’s no point in losing sleep over something you don’t even know is actually going to happen. There is only the present moment, and staying here is the key to inner peace.

  1. Think Outwardly

Gaining an inner peace of mind is closely linked to you and what’s inside of you, but thinking outwardly and looking at the bigger picture is also a key factor here. Sometimes, when your problems consume you, it can be of great help to remind yourself how big our world is. When you think about all other cultures, countries, their history, the disasters they’re facing or have faced, you realize how small you are and how your problems are actually not that significant. Looking beyond yourself can help you find peace.

  1. Be Grateful

When you’re drained by stress, anxiety, sadness, worries, and whatnot, it can be close to impossible to focus on being grateful – or find even a tiny thing to be thankful for. However, it can truly turn things around. If you think about it, there’s always something to be grateful for, be it sunshine, family, your home, your pets, rain, or even ice cream. Find your own items to add to the gratitude list and you’ll feel a lot better.

With all the craziness in this world, it’s easy to let problems, worries, disharmony and fear take control of you. However, with a bit of will and a little effort, you can find the peace of mind you’ve been searching for, whatever challenges life may throw at you.
