You must have seen an elderly family member complain of stiffness and joint pains who has had to alter lifestyle because of it. Life gets slower and painful of course. There are temporary causes and solutions that they resort in order to manage the pain. This is arthritis which is a condition that affects the movement of joints and causes pains and disability if left untreated.
Most people assume arthritis affects the old but be aware that this problem can come at any age. The most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis which is wear and tear of the joints over time and rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune disease besides juvenile arthritis, another autoimmune disease in kids. Juvenile arthritis is very different from the kind of aches that plague the elderly. Kids with this condition suffer from all kinds of autoimmune forms of arthritis. It is an extremely serious condition where the body’s immune system attacks the joints causing extreme swelling, stiffness and long term permanent damage in some cases. And, if left untreated, it can lead to loss of movement and mobility, blindness and even death in some cases.
Joint health is never taken up seriously but slowly and gradually, it is soon overtaking everything else as the silent and lone responsible cause of disability. The other misconception with those with joint pains is they think rigorous exercise will help them deal with the pain. But the truth is it might do more damage than provide relief. A little bit of walking or aquatic routines may ease off some pain. Light and simple exercises that involve calf and hamstring stretches and light weightlifting can do wonders.
Sadly, there is no treatment available for arthritis except for pain management from medication to yoga and natural remedies. The type of treatment also depends on the kind of arthritis. Those with rheumatoid arthritis should get early treatment to delay the progress of the disease. And those with osteoarthritis are recommended to lose weight besides OTC anti-inflammatory medications and remedies.
It is always a good idea to be aware of the kinds of aches and pains your joints go through. And greater detail and caution for parents whose kids complain of aches and pains in the joints.
