Beno, a one year old child from Kenya was fighting for his life. Unable to find the correct diagnosis for their sick child, his parents brought him to Apollo Hospitals. Where after a detailed examination, Beno was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia. It is a rare disorder where ducts that drain the bile produced in the liver to the intestines do not develop. This is one of the primary reasons for liver failure among infants.
Biliary Atresia is usually treated with surgery to re-establish bile flow in infants below the age of 2 months. When the child passes this age, the complexities mount and treatment becomes difficult. Beno’s case went undiagnosed till he reached the age of one. The only option left was a Pediatric Liver Transplant.
The surgery was complicated and unusual. A team of 50 people was put together at the Centre for Liver and Biliary Surgery at Apollo Hospitals. Beno’s father donated a segment of his liver. This was transplanted into Beno after a 12-hour long procedure.
Beno’s recovery was as remarkable as his case. After two weeks of great care at the hospital, he was healthy enough to be discharged.
Beno’s story is proof that miracles do come true. With the latest advancements in medical technology, it is now possible to treat several conditions that were impossible to treat a few years ago. Several top liver transplant surgeons in India itself are making a huge difference everyday.
