5 Great Tips to Cure Tonsillitis

36_1

Do you ever wake up in the morning with an acute throat pain? Did you feel a piercing sensation around your throat? Did you notice that every time you swallowed even your saliva, it took a lot of effort to force down?  This is nothing but the symptoms of Tonsillitis which affects your throat and causes pain. This is caused by bacteria or virus which infects the tonsils.

Now what are Tonsils?  A set of lymphoid tissues in our throat which forms the first stage of our body’s immune system is called tonsils. Of the six tonsils in our throat, we commonly refer to only a pair of Palatine Tonsils as tonsils. These are two oval shaped tissues positioned at the back of your throat which serve as defence against body infections.

Tonsillitis may cause difficulty in swallowing, inability to eat solid food particles and you tend to lose appetite. Here are 5 great tips you must follow to avoid tonsillitis:

1 Drink plenty of fluids

The best cure for tonsillitis is drinking warm water with tablespoon of salt and a little lime and honey. Water helps to prevent dryness. Lemon has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity.

2 Fix up your oral habits

Smoking chokes your throat and worsens the problem.  Your throat may hurt when you swallow. Kicking the cigarette butt will help you tackle tonsillitis better.

3 Gurgle regularly

Keep gurgling with warm water diluted with salt to help cure the ailment instantly. The warm water has a soothing effect and the salt will kill the bacteria. Use mouthwash and throat lozenges as it helps in relieving pain.

4 Eat Vegetables

Boiled and steamed vegetables are helpful in curing throat infections. Take vegetable juice prepared from carrot and beetroot. Fenugreek seeds boiled in water are also a way to cure tonsillitis. Avoid spicy foods.

5 Take Antibiotics

Only take those antibiotics which are prescribed by the doctor. Continue the medication even if you feel good. This will prevent the infection from flaring up again.

Alternatives

Tonsillitis can also be eased by some other means:

  • Serrapeptase is an enzyme having anti-inflammatory properties and can help decrease pain.
  • Papain is an enzyme that can treat inflammation.
  • Andographics can help treat fever and throat symptoms.
  • Throat sprays and lozenges can be applied as it aids in soothing your sore throat. It is important to consult your doctor before using these countermeasures.

Extra Care

You should be extra careful in case of children. Do not allow them to go around infected people. Wash their hands after they come from play. Keep a sanitizer handy. Wash and disinfect the surface of toys. Teach children to cover their mouth when coughing and sneezing other than everyday hygiene practice.

Tonsillitis is extremely painful. Prevention is always better than cure. So if you are prone to tonsillitis avoid having icy cold eatables because your health is in your hands.
