Cardiothoracic Surgery

This involves treating any diseased organs within the chest cavity (thorax), including heart and lung diseases. The Apollo Hospitals’ (India) Center of Cardiothoracic Surgery attracts thousands of patients from India and abroad, and is capable of executing all types of heart surgery. The Center has successfully performed over 150,000 surgeries so far, making it one of the most experienced heart care centers in South Asia. Our cardio surgical unit has successfully performed a wide range of surgeries, including neonatal open heart surgeries, aneurysm surgeries, and heart transplants.

CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft)

CABG is a form of heart surgery that redirects blood around clogged arteries in order to increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. Our cardiac surgeons have ample experience in dealing with CABG surgeries.

We are able to accommodate critically ill patients suffering from severe left ventricular dysfunction or diffusely diseased vessels. We avoid using the heart-lung machine, and can thus perform the CABG on patients who have associated morbidities (e.g. renal disease, compromised lung function or other coexisting diseases). We are also capable of performing the total arterial revascularization of the heart off-pump with varying configurations of arterial conduits (e.g. left/right internal mammary arteries, radial arteries, gastro-epiploic arteries),depending on the patient's unique requirements... Beating Heart Surgery

We perform Coronary Bypass Surgeries via contemporary techniques, e.g. the off-pump bypass. Most of our surgeries (over 98%) are ‘off-pump’ or ‘beating heart’ surgeries... Read More

Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Surgery (MICAS)

MICAS (also known as MICS CABG) has revolutionised the way coronary surgery is performed. While conventional coronary bypass surgeries (CABG) are performed by splitting or cutting through the breastbone or sternum, this novel and advanced technique allows our surgeons to approach the heart through the side of the left chest, via a small 4cm incision.

Thoracic Surgery

Our thoracic surgeons regularly perform extensive and challenging thoracic procedures (lung, oesophagus, etc.) with consistent success... Read More

Heart Transplants

Our branches in Chennai and New Delhi run the Heart Transplant Program. In 1995, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai became the first private hospital in India to successfully perform a heart transplant. The willingness of an American patient (who is now doing well) to undergo a heart transplant at our Chennai facility last year is the best testimony to our expertise.

Heart Valve Surgery

This specialized surgery is performed to treat abnormalities like Mitral Regurgitation (MR)... Read More

Emergency Cardiac Surgery

This surgery is performed to treat the complications caused by the dilatation of the aorta (aortic aneurysm), problems caused by an irregular heart beat (arrhythmias, e.g. atrial fibrillation), heart failure, Marfan syndrome (a genetic disorder of connective tissue that causes defects of the heart valves and aorta, alongside other cardiovascular abnormalities), and other uncommon conditions.

Keyhole Angioplasty

This is an alternative to the conventional bypass surgery. The major advantage of the procedure is the shorter duration of time required (less than an hour), and its non-surgical nature, which allows for a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery. This procedure is supported by the use of advanced techniques, including new generation drug eluting stents and adjunctive Imaging Technology of IVUS (Intravascular Ultrasound). The VIUS allows a virtual view of the interior surface of the arteries, simplifying the procedure... Read More

Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR)

The FFR is used to determine if a cardiac patient really needs a stent or a bypass surgery, or if he or she can avoid an invasive procedure by relying on medicine. This evidence-based procedure is beneficial to the patient as FFR... Read More

OCT Technique – Optical Coherence Tomography

The OCT is a light-based catheter which acquires images (i.e. photos) of the interior surfaces of heart blood vessels. OCT is a recently-developed, catheter-based Intravascular Imaging Technology that provides micron-scale resolution... Read More
