    Epilepsy

Epilepsy, also known as seizure disorder, is a chronic brain condition characterised by recurrent, unprovoked seizures due to disruption in brain signal transmission. Seizures many a time are unprovoked and are debilitating when they happen unannounced–-without a warning. Up to one third of patients with epilepsy worldwide, may fail to have an adequate response to anti-seizure medications- this is called Drug Refractory Epilepsy. Luckily, most of these can be completely controlled with the right advanced treatment for epilepsy.

At Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, we have dedicated neurologists with expertise in Epilepsy (Epileptologists) , and neurosurgeons are committed to providing personalised treatment plans for epilepsy, as well as necessary support and guidance to ensure the best possible well-being for our patients.

    FAQ's

Some of the common warning signs of epilepsy could be in the form of transient symptoms such as: ➢ a sense of déjà vu ➢ unusual odours or tastes ➢ Jerky limb movements ➢ stiffness or twitching in a specific body part ➢ lip smacking ➢ uttering random noises whilst being unaware ➢ blankly staring into space ➢ eye fluttering ➢ Sudden unexplained falls

Diagnosis of epilepsy is clinical. To evaluate the cause, basing imaging and EEG may be required. However, for drug refractory epilepsy, several tests might be needed before offering advanced treatment. Doctors at Apollo Hospitals diagnose epilepsy by observing your condition for 3 days or until you have experienced 5 seizures through a test called Video EEG. A comprehensive evaluation and diagnostic examination are carried out using advanced equipment, such as an electroencephalogram (EEG), 3-tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), Wada testing, and various neuropsychiatry and neuropsychology tests.

Treatments are based on identifying the type of epilepsy and prescribing the right medication. If medications and regular monitoring fail, surgeries are recommended. Surgery aims for either complete seizure freedom, which includes curative/resective surgery and stereo EEG implantation, or seizure reduction through palliative surgery, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS).
