Methods to prevent Heart Disease

Diet to prevent Heart Disease

A healthy diet and lifestyle are your best options to fight cardiovascular disease. It is not as hard as you may think as it is the overall pattern of your choices that counts. Ensure you follow a heart healthy diet that includes low-fat proteins, vegetables and fruits. Be aware to control your salt intake as excess of sodium increases the risk of high blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of heart attack, coronary heart disease and stroke. An ideal meal plan would be three meals and two snacks (fruits, vegetables and nuts) per day and your night time meal must be lightest (soup and salad).

Once you enrol in our Healthy Heart Program, you will be guided on healthy diet choices and a Heart healthy diet will be prescribed by our dietitian, completely customised for you.

Yoga to prevent Heart Disease

Yoga plays a vital role in the healthy functioning of the body. Specific asanas, when followed diligently helps focus on good posture, weight maintenance, stamina, blood circulation, expansion of the lungs thereby increasing its capacity, stress relief, strengthening of the heart region and relaxation of the entire system. While yoga aids in improving overall health of the body, it greatly reduces the risk of heart diseases.

Doing three or four sessions of moderate intensity exercises in a week, for around 30 minutes , will significantly reduce your risk for heart disease. No matter what exercise you choose to do, remember to drink enough water before, during and after to prevent dehydration.

Once you enrol in our Healthy Heart Program, you will be guided on exercise options and fitness regimens to enhance your heart health.

Awareness of Risk Factors

The first step to the prevention of heart diseases is being aware of the risk factors and preventing them. Main risk factors include family history, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, alcoholism, stress and age. Amongst the mentioned factors, smoking is the only preventable cause of heart disease. Changing your lifestyle in a positive manner and adopting a healthy daily routine is imperative.

Our Healthy Heart program has doctors who would not only assess risk but also counsel you on avoidance and reversal of risk factors.

Meditation helps in improved quality of life, stress relief, better quality of sleep, stimulation of the immune system, greater concentration among other benefits. It is important to create an environment where you won't be disturbed. The practice should ideally be followed at the same time and place. Ensure to turn off your phones, televisions, radios and any other sources of distraction.

Once you enrol in our Healthy Heart Program, you will be given meditation and breathing guidance by our Yoga expert.

Micronutrients that help keep the heart healthy

Some micronutrients such as magnesium and potassium, when taken in optimal amounts are found to be beneficial and promote heart health. You should exercise caution with a few supplements such as Vitamin D and Calcium as a few studies indicate that these supplements can result in increased calcium deposition in the vessels. Patients at risk of heart diseases or those with ischemic heart disease are advised to take a sodium restricted diet.

Our Healthy Heart program doctors will prescribe supplements based on the investigation reports of individual patients
