Gynecologic oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian canceruterine cancercervical cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer.

A gynecologic oncologist has extensive training and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of these cancers.

Gynecologic oncologists have completed obstetrics and gynecology residency and then have pursued superspecialty training in the management of female pelvic cancers.

Gynecologic oncologists treat cancer exclusively. This means they have an experience and expertise a general gynecologist or surgeon doesn’t.

Gynecologic oncologists offer an integrated approach to the diagnosis and surgical management of women’s cancers and also complex benign gynecologic diseases like extensive endometriosis and fibroids.

Gynecologic oncology surgeons are experts in complex and supraradical surgeries for pelvic cancers including laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, fertility-sparing surgery for young women with gynecologic cancer, and risk reduction procedures for women with inherited cancer syndromes.

There is evidence which demonstrates that women with gynaecological cancer receiving treatment from specialized Gynecologic oncosurgeons at specialized centres benefit from longer survival than those managed in standard care and by a general gynecologist or surgeon.
