Recurrent pregnancy loss, defined as the loss of two or more consecutive pregnancies before 20 weeks of gestation, is a devastating experience for many couples. It can be emotionally draining and physically taxing, leaving couples feeling lost and uncertain about their future.

      Understanding the causes

The causes of recurrent pregnancy loss are not always clear. However, there are a number of factors that can contribute, including:

      • Genetic abnormalities: Chromosomal abnormalities in either the mother or the father can lead to miscarriage.
      • Hormonal imbalances: Hormone imbalances, such as low progesterone or high prolactin, can interfere with the implantation and development of the embryo.
      • Immune system problems: Certain conditions, such as antiphospholipid syndrome, can cause the immune system to attack the pregnancy.
      • Uterine abnormalities: Structural abnormalities in the uterus, such as fibroids or adhesions, can make it difficult for a pregnancy to develop normally.

Despite the challenges, there is reason to hope for couples experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss. With the right support and treatment, many couples go on to have healthy pregnancies. Advancements in medical technology and a growing understanding of the causes of miscarriage are also providing new avenues for hope and success.
