Types of Menstrual Cups and which one to choose

A reusable menstrual cup can be a safe and economic divide that could be used throughout a woman’s menstruation. Switching to a cup can also help to reduce the number of disposable tampons or pads one throws away. Anatomy plays a big role in determining which cup is suitable for whom.

      What is a Menstrual Cup?

A menstruation cup is reusable hygiene product. The period fluid is collected in a small, flexible funnel-shaped cup made of rubber or silicone that is placed into the vagina. Many women use cups as an eco-friendly way. Women can wear a cup for up to 12 hours, depending on the flow.

What are the Types of Menstrual Cups?

Different brands sell menstrual cups. A cloth bag is used to store menstrual cups and is available in size 1 and size 2. The small size 1 is used by teenagers and women under the age of 30 or women who have not given birth also require smaller cups. The size 2 cup is slightly large and is preferred by women over  age 30. It is used by women who have given birth or have heavy menstrual flow. Below are some of the most popular menstrual cups.

      Diva cup

One of the largest manufacturers of menstrual cups is Diva International. Diva Cups are use medical-grade silicone that is transparent. Diva Cups are significantly longer than other kinds, so they’ll fit better if the cervix is higher in the vaginal canal. The Diva Cup suggests users change the cups every 12 months.

      Lunette

Lunette menstruation cups were founded in Finland in 2004 and are now available in over 40 countries. Lunette is made using FDA-approved medical silicone. It’s quite pliable, making it simpler to use.

      The Keeper

Keeper is the only brand that uses a latex menstrual cup. It’s dark in colour but less flexible compared to other cups, making it more difficult to place. On the other hand, due to its latex structure, it will survive for years. It also has a smaller capacity for liquids.

      Lily cup

The Lily Cup is one of the longest menstruation cups available, and it works well if the cervix is high in the vaginal canal. Lily Cups are composed of medical-grade silicone, like most other cups. This product stands out because it has an angled design that is similar to the curvature of the vaginal and cervix. The Lily Cup Compact is the only collapsible menstruation cup available. It has a compact-like container, as the name implies. This means the woman can tuck it away in the bottom of her purse, safe in the knowledge that it will be there whenever and wherever the period begins.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Menstrual cups have several advantages, the most significant feature is that they are reusable. Many menstruation cups are long-lasting. We can save money by utilizing menstrual cups instead of tampons or sanitary napkins every month. A menstrual cup can be worn for at least 12 hours. When compared to the 4 to 8 hours it takes to use a tampon, that’s a significant amount of time saved.

Other advantages of menstrual cups are:

      • Menstrual cups do not dry up the vaginal area. This protects you from vaginal infections by preserving good bacterial flora.
      • Toxicity shock syndrome (TSS), a rare, life-threatening illness connected to tampon use, is not linked to menstrual cups.
      • Chemical’s common in tampons and pads, such as bleach and dioxin, are not present in menstrual cups. Some dioxins are known to cause cancer in humans, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
      • Many women experience less acute cramps when using cups.
      • Cups help to eliminate the odor that develops when menstrual blood is exposed to air.
      • Most women do not have a feeling like a cup is placed.
      • The menstrual cups are environmentally friendly.

What are the disadvantages of using a menstrual cup?

Learning how to insert a menstrual cup, according to some women, requires some practice. Then there’s the issue of cleanup. Many women are hesitant to wash their cups in public restrooms.

What are the aftercare tips while using a menstrual cup?

They should be rinsed and wiped clean before re-inserting into the vagina. Empty the cup twice a day. Reusable menstruation cups can last from six months to ten years if properly taken care off.
