Cancer diagnosis and treatment programmes aim to cure or considerably prolong the life of patients and to ensure the best possible quality of life for cancer survivors. Technological advancements in cancer care have helped improve the quality of life in individuals diagnosed with cancer. Let’s take a look at some of the latest advances:

      • Precision medicine

Precision medicine involves analyses of the unique biology of cancer in an individual. This enables doctors to give the best treatment possible, with fewer side effects. Examples include genetic testing, radionuclide therapy and proton beam therapy. Proton beam therapy is a targeted attack on cancer cells. It kills cancer cells without hurting the healthy tissue around them. Radionuclide therapy is a safe & targeted approach that uses a molecule labelled with a radioisotope to deliver a high level of radiation in cancers like thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer and neuroendocrine tumours.

      • Immunotherapy

This revolutionary approach harnesses the body’s immune system to fight cancer, showing promising results in various cancers like lung, breast, and melanoma. India is seeing increased availability of immunotherapy drugs and clinical trials.

      • Minimally invasive surgery

Robotically assisted minimally invasive surgeries and laparoscopic surgeries are less painful than traditional surgery. They help people recover faster and get back to their lives sooner.

      • Radiotherapy (RT): This treatment uses X-rays to kill cancer cells. These are more precise and less damaging to healthy tissue & include Image Guided radiotherapy, Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy or Stereotactic Ablative RT (SBRT / SABR).
      • Artificial intelligence (AI): Artificial intelligence (A.I.) and machine learning (ML) are computer systems designed and trained to aid oncology doctors and health professionals in treating patients with cancer faster and more accurately.
      • Particle therapy: Particle therapy delivers a highly conformal dose of radiation to the tumour while sparing adjacent healthy tissues. It is particularly beneficial for treating tumors located near sensitive organs & radioresistant tumors, such as certain types of sarcomas and recurrent cancers.
