At best of the centres Worldwide and in India, in general the 1year success rate of liver transplant is about 85-90% and for 5year is around 70%. That means 85-90% patients who have undergone liver transplantation will successfully live beyond 1year period after the critical initial recovery period and similarly more than 70% patients who have undergone liver transplant would live beyond 5 years. This is significant when compared to less then 45% chance of 1year survival in patients with end stage liver disease who could not undergo transplant.Long term data suggests that both graft and patient survival is around 50% at 15 years from liver transplantation. This survival depends on underlying cause of liver disease, patient compliance to medications and general care after liver transplant.
Other than survival, improvement in Quality of Life (QoL) is another important aspect of successful liver transplant. Significant improvement in QoL has been seen in patients within 1 year of liver transplantation and this continues to improve afterwards. This improvement in QoL has been seen in also aspects of life like general health, professional/work related activity, exercise and sports related activities, travelling, sexual activity and pregnancy.
