      What is neuro rehabilitation?

Conditions like stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries or certain diseases like multiple sclerosis are most often accompanied by the loss of the ability to walk, speak, swallow or carry out activities like eating, dressing and self-care. Retraining the brain to regain these functions becomes essential as these losses cannot be fully restored with medications alone. Neuro rehabilitation is a set of evidence-based, comprehensive activities including medications, interventions and therapy to achieve maximum possible recovery of patients with neurological illnesses.

Why does one need robotic training after paralysis?

Traditionally, a patient with a paralyzing neurological condition undergoes physiotherapy at home for many months in the hope of being able to walk again. This approach has some drawbacks.

      • Firstly, the physical efforts of several people are required to hold a person during the process of learning to stand and walk.
      • Secondly, if a patient requires prolonged hospital stay & care, a lot of time is wasted before any significant therapy can be provided, thus impacting the final outcome.
      • Also, the process of physically holding and making a person walk usually leads to production of a walking pattern that does not resemble a normal gait.
      • The limited amount of therapy administered in this manner may not be very effective for most patients with significant paralysis.

Training in specialized robotic devices in a hospital set-up overcomes the challenges mentioned above.

Robotic training for neuro rehabilitation now available at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai

Apollo Hospital, Navi Mumbai now offers an advanced robotic device which enables us to overcome all these drawbacks. The robotic device, known as Lokomat, is a state-of-the-art imported machine from Hocoma, Switzerland that allows even completely paralyzed patients to practice normal walking for a long time, in a safe setting without fear of falling or feeling tired and helps regain a more normal pattern of walking.

Paralyzed patients can avail themselves of training on this device under the care of an expert team of medical professionals and therapists to regain mobility. Our evidence-based rehab program leads to faster and more complete recovery of lost physical functions due to brain disease, thus preventing disability in the community and reducing the burden on family members and other caregivers.
