Pelvic cancer affects parts of the pelvis mainly urinary bladder, rectum, and reproductive organs. In females most commonly heard are of three categories:
· Ovarian cancer
· Uterine Sarcoma: This occurs in the muscles and the supporting tissues of the uterus.
· Cervical Cancer: This can be differentiated as Endocervix (at the opening of the cervix) and Exocervix / Ectocervix (at outer portion). The major cause of cervical cancer is infection with certain subtypes of human papillomavirus
The malignancy or cancer develops in the structures or organs of these areas. The main symptoms that manifest themselves include diarrhoea, abdominal pain and, discomfort.
The requirements for ensuring beneficial nutrition with respect this cancer revolves around treating papillomavirus infections, smoking and factors caused by the procedure adopted for treatment.
Treatment and prognosis of pelvic cancer varies depending on the type of cancer and the stage of advancement. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy.
Some suggestions for the nutritional therapies include the following:
· Intake of variety of fruits, vegetables and related nutrients such as anti-oxidants and phyto nutrients.
· Limit the intake of fat fibre and lactose / dairy products.
· To avoid acute gastrointestinal symptoms a low fat , low lactose diet
· Supplement of probiotics and doses of anti-oxidant vitamins may be considered.
· Restrict spicy food and carbonated drinks.
