About Dr Muthukumarassamy Rajakannu

Dr R Muthukumarassamy is a highly skilled Liver Transplantation and Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) surgeon with more than 25 years of experience. His areas of expertise include liver diseases in adults and children, abdominal trauma, and gastrointestinal oncology notably liver, biliary tract and pancreatic malignancies. He is well versed in the techniques of adult and pediatric liver transplantation. He is also an expert in complex liver resections for hepatocellular carcinoma, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hilar cholangiocarcinoma. He has published many articles in the field of liver disease and liver transplantation.
After completing MBBS from JIPMER, Pondicherry in 2000, Dr Muthukumarassamy pursued his surgical training at JIPMER, Pondicherry and obtained his MS (General Surgery) in 2003. He continued to work in JIPMER as senior resident till 2005. He also completed DNB in General Surgery during the same period. Simultaneously he became a Member of Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons. He worked as an assistant professor in surgery till 2010. Then Dr Muthukumarassamy went to France to pursue his training HPB surgery and liver transplantation. He obtained is his Master’s in HPB surgery in 2012 from the prestigious Henri Bismuth Institute in Paris. He continued to work in Paul Brousse Hospital, Paris as a research and clinical fellow in HPB surgery and Liver transplantation for 6 years during which he trained in various techniques of complex liver resections, deceased donor liver transplantation and living donor liver transplantation. He obtained a PhD in liver tumors from Paris-Saclay University in 2017. In January 2018, he returned to Chennai to work as a consultation in the Institute Liver disease and Transplantation, Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre.  In January 2026, Dr Muthukumarassamy has become a senior consultant in the Liver Transplantation Institute at Apollo Hospitals, Gream’s road.
