Fetal MRI Services

Center for Advanced Imaging, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi

Indraprastha Apollo Hospital offers comprehensive Fetal MRI services as an advanced extension of prenatal imaging. The program is designed to provide high-resolution, clinically meaningful evaluation of the fetus, supported by experienced radiologists, standardized protocols, and close collaboration with obstetricians and fetal medicine specialists.

Advanced Imaging Technology

Fetal MRI at our center is performed on the Philips 3T Ingenia MRI Scanner, a state-of-the-art system that offers:

  • High-resolution imaging with excellent soft tissue contrast
  • Faster image acquisition, reducing scan time and motion-related artifacts
  • Improved visualization of small and complex fetal structures
  • Enhanced patient comfort with a more spacious design

This advanced technology enables precise and reliable fetal assessment, even in challenging clinical scenarios.

What is Fetal MRI?

Fetal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency waves to generate detailed images of the fetus within the uterus.

  • No use of ionizing radiation
  • Safe when performed under medical supervision
  • Provides multi-planar imaging with superior anatomical detail

It is typically used as a problem-solving tool when additional information is needed beyond ultrasound.

Clinical Role and Importance of Fetal MRI

Fetal MRI plays a key role in refining diagnosis and guiding clinical care:

  • Offers detailed evaluation of fetal brain, chest, abdomen, spine, and placenta
  • Helps clarify or confirm ultrasound findings
  • Improves diagnostic confidence and accuracy
  • Supports multidisciplinary decision-making and delivery planning
  • Enables clear and informed counseling for parents

For patients, this translates into better understanding, reduced uncertainty, and improved preparedness.

Our Approach: Patient-Centric and Individualized Care

At Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, fetal MRI is delivered with a strong emphasis on:

  • Individualized care tailored to each patient’s clinical condition
  • A patient-centric approach, ensuring comfort, safety, and clear communication
  • A problem-solving mindset, where each scan is customized to answer specific clinical questions
  • Real-time scan monitoring, allowing optimization of imaging based on fetal position and movement
  • Correlative ultrasound, performed whenever required to complement MRI findings and enhance diagnostic accuracy

This integrated approach ensures that fetal MRI is not just an imaging test, but a comprehensive diagnostic service.

Indications: When is Fetal MRI Recommended?

Fetal MRI may be advised in select pregnant patients based on the findings of the initial ultrasound examination:

  • Central nervous system abnormalities
  • Thoracic and lung lesions
  • Abdominal and renal conditions
  • Placental assessment, including suspected placenta accreta spectrum
  • Multi-fetal pregnancies with complications
  • All clinical settings where ultrasound findings need further clarification, for example maternal obesity or oligohydramnios where ultrasound visualization is suboptimal

Preparation for Fetal MRI

Before the Scan

  • Fasting for 3–4 hours is required
  • Morning schedule is preferred
  • Avoid tea/coffee or a high-carb diet a few hours before the MRI
  • Wear comfortable clothing without metallic components
  • Remove all metallic items (jewelry, watches, hairpins, etc.)
  • Carry:
    • Previous ultrasound reports and medical records
    • Referral from your doctor
    • Aadhar Card

Inform the Medical Team If You Have:

  • Any implanted medical device
  • History of surgery
  • Claustrophobia or anxiety
  • Any significant medical condition

During the Procedure

  • Duration: Approximately 30–40 minutes
  • The scan is painless and non-invasive
  • You will lie comfortably while images are acquired
  • Ear protection is provided due to machine noise
  • You will be guided to remain still for optimal imaging
  • The team may adjust the scan in real time to capture the best images

No intravenous contrast injection is typically required. Oral sedation may be required in select patients.

MRI Safety

  • MRI uses no radiation and is considered safe during pregnancy when clinically indicated
  • Typically performed after the first trimester
  • Strict adherence to international safety protocols
  • Continuous monitoring ensures maternal and fetal safety
  • Only MRI-safe equipment is used within the scan environment

After the Scan

  • Normal activities can be resumed immediately
  • Images are interpreted by specialized fetal imaging radiologists
  • Consultation with the radiologists will be scheduled
  • A detailed report is shared with your referring doctor
  • Findings are discussed for further management and counseling

Our Commitment

At Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, we are committed to delivering high-quality, safe, and patient-focused fetal MRI services. By combining advanced technology, clinical expertise, and a collaborative approach, we aim to provide accurate diagnosis and meaningful support for both mother and baby.
