A 50-year-old female resident of Pune, met with an accident on 28th May 2019 at 11 PM. She was resuscitated and brought to Jehangir Hospital. The patient immediately underwent a CT scan and a subdural hematoma was revealed. She underwent a brain surgery on the same night at 2:30 AM. The patient’s condition showed no improvement for 48 hours and she was declared brain dead.

The patient was admitted under the care of Dr. Abhay Somani at Jehangir Hospital, the Cardiologist says, “She was absolutely healthy; the family and A&E team made their best efforts to revive her. When declared brain dead, the family – despite being a large one – from both sides, did not hesitate to donate her organs and help others live.” When Dr. Somani and Transplant Co-coordinator Vrinda Pusalkar proposed the idea of organ donation, the family did not hesitate at all.

Her liver was sent to Apollo Hospitals in Nashik to a 32-year-old patient; one kidney was transplanted in Jehangir Hospital to a 56-year-old and other kidney was sent to another hospital for a 50-year-old patient. “The patient who has received the kidney at Jehangir Hospital was on the waiting list for the last 2-3 years and is absolutely normal post-surgery and will be discharged shortly,” says Dr. Shriniwas Ambike, Nephrologist at Jehangir Hospital.

Mr. Nitin Jain, her younger brother-in-law said, “We are a family in the Jain Community involved in social work for the last 40 years. Not one person from our side or my sister-in-law’s family hesitated in giving the organs. Her eyesight had a high number so we couldn’t give her corneas. In fact, even her daughters who despite the suddenness of the accident were all for donating her organs. This was the best way to ensure her memory lives on.”

Dr. Sachin Vaze, Dr. Shriniwas Ambike, Dr. Yogesh Sohoni and Dr. Kirpekar along with Anesthetist Dr. Avantika Bhat were part of the operating team.
