About Liver Cancer
Liver cancer is the cancer that begins in the cells of your liver. Cancer that begins in another area of the body and then spreads to the liver is called metastatic cancer rather than liver cancer. The most common type of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (or hepatoma or HCC), and it tends to affect males more than females.
Alcoholics are at a greater risk of developing liver cancer. Most people don’t have signs and symptoms in the early stages of primary liver cancer.
No symptoms are seen in early stages of primary liver cancer, When signs and symptoms do appear, they may include:
- Losing weight without trying
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- General weakness and fatigue
- Upper abdominal pain
- Abdominal swelling, white chalky stools
- Yellow discolouration of your skin and the whites of eyes (jaundice)
- Previous incidence of hepatitis C and B infection
- Patients with alcohol-related cirrhosis
- Alcohol abusers
- People with cirrhosis as a result of Hemochromatosis
Diagnosis, Management and Treatment
- Diagnosis is done through blood tests, imaging tests and testing a sample of liver tissue
- Treatments for primary liver cancer depend on the extent (stage) of the disease as well as your age, overall health and personal preferences
- Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy or targeted drug therapy
- Surgery can include removal of tumour or a transplant surgery from a donor
