| Shoulder Replacement Surgery is performed to relieve stiffness and pain that prevents one from performing basic activities of lifting objects , combing hair, dressing etc. Shoulder Replacement surgery gives greater range of motion and allows one to return to normal activities.
The main cause for shoulder joint pain or stiffness is arthritis, both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Other reasons include sports injuries, rotator cuff arthropathy (a combination of severe arthritis and massive non reparable rotator cuff tendon tear), avascular necrosis, fracture in the shoulder and failed replacements.
Symptoms:
- Deep ache within the shoulder joint that worsens with activity or motion.
- Grinding and grating noises when the shoulder is moved.
- Shoulder catch, lock, and grab.
- Difficulty in performing simple daily activities like opening a cupboard, raising the arms, dressing etc.
Treatment:
- Shoulder resurfacing and replacement in case of severe arthritis. In shoulder replacement surgery the parts of the bones that rub together are resurfaced with metal alloys and high density polyethylene inserts.
- The common painful conditions of the shoulder like impingement, A-C joint dysfunction, rotator cuff pathology, calcific deposit, instability and bursitis can be treated by arthroscopy and arthroscopy assisted surgery.
- For shoulder fractures, minimal and less invasive techniques are used. AO (Swiss) instrumentation and implants are also used.
