Mr. Mohd Arif from Pakistan, ailing with Parkinson’s disease was treated successfully using the ‘Deep Brain Stimulation’ (DBS) Procedure, at Apollo Speciality Hospital, Chennai. The patient was diagnosed with Parkinsonism in Pakistan many years ago and despite extensive treatment, his condition had been deteriorating with severe disability in walking and stiffness even on high doses of medication. His sleep was severely affected & appetite had become deranged and he had lost urinary control. This situation made him a candidate for surgical treatment offered for Parkinsonism, which is subthalamic nucleus (STN) Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). After DBS Surgery, Mr. Arif has experienced tremendous reduction in body stiffness and is even able to walk up the stair case. He also feels to have got back his normal appetite, better sleep & has gained good urinary control.

A decade of liver transplantation
Children and adults, who were donors and recipients of liver transplants at Apollo Hospitals during the past 10 years, joined hands to mark a decade of liver transplantation in India. Dr Anupam Sibal, group medical director of Apollo hospitals, said: "Since 1998 more than 200 liver transplants have been done. In the last two years, 128 liver transplants have been carried out with 90 percent success rate and 100 percent in paediatric cases." "This life saving therapy has given hope to thousand with cases of liver failure. Our transplant unit received patients not only from India but from fifteen othercountries including US and Canada," Dr Sibal added. Doctors and hospital staff beamed proudly, as they recollected the journey of each of the patients that had received "not an organ but a new lease of life" at the event held at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital Delhi.
18 Children get cochlear implants in a day!
