US Insurance majors Anthem and Wellpoint, part of the Blue Cross and Blue shield Association announced a pilot project to provide coverage for members to travel to Apollo Hospitals India for Non-Emergency Procedures.

Insurance majors Anthem and Wellpoint, part of the Blue Cross and Blue shield Association announced a pilot project with Serigraph Inc., a specialty printing company in West Bend, that will allow the company's employees to have certain elective medical procedures done in the JCI accredited Apollo hospitals at Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Starting in January 09, patients will be able to receive non-emergency procedures, including major joint replacement and upper and lower back fusion at lower out-of-pocket costs. WellPoint, currently provides health coverage for about 35 million people in the USA.

Healthcare insurer WellPoint, Indianapolis, and Serigraph, a West Bend, Wis.-based graphic- and printing-design company, have launched a medical-tourism pilot program that will allow Serigraph employees to travel to India for more-affordable treatment for certain common elective surgical procedures, according to a news release. Beginning in January 2009, the plan will enable Serigraph employees to undergo a variety of surgeries such as joint replacement or spinal fusion at several of India's Joint Commission International-accredited hospitals. The employer-funded healthcare plan will cover the costs of airfare and accommodations, as well as a dedicated case manager to coordinate travel, medical care and follow-up care services.

A decade of liver transplantation

Children and adults, who were donors and recipients of liver transplants at Apollo Hospitals during the past 10 years, joined hands to mark a decade of liver transplantation in India. Dr Anupam Sibal, group medical director of Apollo hospitals, said: "Since 1998 more than 200 liver transplants have been done. In the last two years, 128 liver transplants have been carried out with 90 percent success rate and 100 percent in paediatric cases." "This life saving therapy has given hope to thousand with cases of liver failure. Our transplant unit received patients not only from India but from fifteen othercountries including US and Canada," Dr Sibal added. Doctors and hospital staff beamed proudly, as they recollected the journey of each of the patients that had received "not an organ but a new lease of life" at the event held at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital Delhi.

18 Children get cochlear implants in a day!
