Music Therapy

The ability of music to bring about a sense of mental well being dates back to the Inca empire in America, to ancient Greece, Africa, Egypt and India. Indian Classical music has a tremendous impact on an individual's moods and behaviour. Certain ragas with special notes ease stress and act on an individual's mindset.

Music therapy is the therapeutic application of music by a trained music therapist, to restore, maintain or enhance the cognitive, socio emotional and physical functioning of normal/ disabled persons of all ages. It is the planned and creative use of music to attain and maintain health and well-being. Individuals of any age and ability may benefit from Music Therapy, regardless of their musical skill and background. Music Therapy may address physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive and social needs. It focuses on meeting therapeutic aims, which distinguishes it from musical entertainment or musical education.

There are two types of Music therapy in vogue. One is passive and the other is active. Both the forms have therapeutic value but different individuals require different patterns. In the passive form of therapy one has listen with rapt attention to the music selected to the requirements of the individual. The passive form of therapy is being utilized in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cardiology, Neurology, Pediatrics etc.,

The Active form of Music therapy is of immense help in

  • Neurological disorders - neurological aphasia, receptive aphasia, expressive aphasia
  • Speech disorders in children - to enhance speech fluency
  • Hyperactive children to reduce hyper activity

The Passive form of Music therapy is more helpful in enhancing concentration and memory, reducing stress and strain, in cardiac disorders like hypertension, etc. During labour, relaxing music calms the patient in the delivery room. Regular exposure to music during pregnancy gives a fascinating experience to the foetus. Good soothing music nourishes both the mother and the child. Regular exposure to music also cures insomnia. The passive form of music therapy is indeed very helpful in reducing the number of migraine attacks.

Music therapy is also used to help children and adults with problematic behaviour, to make effective adjustments towards social, emotional, mental and educational aspects of their behaviour.

Many of the imbalances may be set right by regular exposure to certain ragas with special emphasis on certain notes.
