What is the Cure to Disk Degenerative Disease?

Degenerative Disc Disease is a condition that occurs when one or more of the discs between the vertebrae of the spinal column get worse or break down that leads to pain.

Spinal disks work like shock absorbers between the vertebrae. They facilitate your back to stay lithe so that you can twist and bend. As you age, they start showing signs of wear and tear. They start to break down and may not work as well.

What Causes It?

The disks change in ways that may cause Degenerative Disk Disease, such as:

Crack: The strain of daily movements and minor damages over the years can cause tiny tears in the outer wall that contains nerves. Any tears near the nerves can become sore. And if the wall collapses, the disk’s soft core may push through the cracks. The disk may swell, or slip out of place, which is called a Slipped or Herniated Disk and can affect the nearby nerves.

Dry out: When you’re born, the disks in your spine are mostly made up of water. But as you age, they lose water and start to get thinner. Flatter disks can’t take up shocks as conveniently as before. The water loss also means less padding or cushioning between the vertebrae. This can lead to other problems in your spine that might cause pain.

How Is It Treated?

The objective is to relieve pain and to stop more damage. The treatment will depend on the symptoms and the condition. This may include:

Physical Therapy: The aim of physical therapy is to help you go back to your daily activities as soon as possible. Exercise is very effective for a painful Degenerative Disc, and it can help you heal faster. Physiotherapists can explain the proper way of walking and lifting techniques, and they’ll work with you to strengthen and stretch your lower back, leg, and stomach muscles.

Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – Ibuprofen (Motrin, Nuprin, Advil), Aspirin, Naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve) and Celecoxib (Celebrex) are examples of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that are used to reduce inflammation and relieve the pain.
