Is Blood Cancer Curable?
Blood Cancers, or Hematologic Cancers,
affect the production and function of blood cells. Nearly all of these cancers
start in the bone marrow where blood is produced. The various types include
Lymphoma, Leukaemia, and Myeloma.
As the name implies, this type of cancer
affects the production and functioning of your blood cells. Blood cancer begins
in the bone marrow, which is the essential source of blood production. Stem
cells in your bone marrow develop and grow into three types of blood cells: Red
Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, and Platelets. In patients suffering from blood
cancer the blood production process is disturbed because of the development of
an abnormal type of blood cell.
Blood cancer is a type of blood malignancy
that can be managed in most cases. Doctors may recommend Chemotherapy, where
high-intensity drugs are used to kill the cancer cells. However, all the cells
are targeted and the drug could affect the healthy cells as well. Biological
Therapy is another option wherecertain drugs are introduced to the systemto
trigger the immune system to tackle blood cancer cells.
The highest success rate when it comes to
blood cancer, however, is after a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). During a Bone
Marrow Transplant, healthy blood-producing stem cells are infused to the body
after elimination of the abnormalbone marrow cells. The objective of this
treatment is to reignite the production of healthy blood cells. It is expected
that the healthy cells would rapidly overcrowd the unhealthy cells and the
cancer would be cured.
