Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals has the unique advantage of not being a stand-alone cancer unit but also having the most modern backup from all super specialties and diagnostics. At Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, a coordinated multi disciplinary approach has been adopted in the treatment of patients suffering from cancer. Apollo Hospitals also offers specialty clinics like The Breast Clinic, Brain Tumour Clinic and Thyroid Clinic.
Radiation for Cancer Therapy Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals has Linear Accelerators (LINAC) for external beam radiotherapy. The Multileaf Collimator (MLC) with Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) are the latest developments in accuracy and precision, resulting in optimum radiation.
Stereotactic Radio Surgery and Radio Therapy This is a non-invasive technique employed to treat various types of intra-cranial lesions like Arteriovenous Malformations, Meningiomas and Acoustic Schwanomas. The Linear Accelerator assisted Stereotactic Radio Surgery is a widely accepted form of treatment and is extremely cost-effective. Through this procedure, deep-seated lesions can be treated precisely. The Apollo Hospitals is the first among the few institutions in the country to offer this treatment. On an average around 100 SRS and SRT are done in a year.
Medical Oncology Cancer patients receive chemotherapy of the highest standards at Apollo Hospitals every year. Conventional and high dose chemotherapy is routinely administered. Pediatric Oncology is under the care of specialized consultants, while Haemato-oncology is one of the most successful areas of Medical Oncology.
Surgical Oncology Every year Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals conducts over 800 surgeries. Complex tumour removals are skillfully performed by Apollo's highly trained and motivated surgical oncologists. They are ably supported by dedicated operating theatres, recovery and ICU staff. Apollo's success rate in Oncology surgeries is comparable to that of the best centers in the world. Specialized surgeries like skull base, commando, liver resection, micro vascular reconstructions of flaps, extensive resection of hepatic and lung tumors, limb conserving surgery in bone tumours, laparoscopic surgery in staging and diagnosis and the like are performed with high success rates.
Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Bone Marrow Transplants are performed to treat malignant conditions like Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, Lymphatic Leukaemia, Myeloma and Hodgkin's disease. Specific cases of solid tumours and genetic disorders like Thalassemia have also benefited from this treatment. The BMT unit at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals has expertise in both Autologous and Allogenic bone marrow transplants.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) This is a powerful imaging technique that holds great promise in the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, particularly cancer. A non-invasive test, the PET scan accurately images the cellular function of the human body. In a single PET scan, the entire body can be examined. PET scanning provides a more complete picture, making it easier for the doctor to diagnose problems, determine the extent of disease, prescribe treatment, and track progress.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) This highly promising treatment technique is available at Apollo Hospitals. Approximately 4500 IMRT are carried out every year in Apollo. It permits greatly increased control over the radiation field to customize optimum radiation dose distribution for higher tumour control. It is a highly complex computerized planning and delivering system which not only changes the shape of the beam but also modulates its intensity so as to prevent any radiation to the normal tissue.
