Pediatric Cardiology
Paediatric Cardiology deals with heart conditions in
babies (including unborn babies), children and
adolescents. Structural, functional, and
rhythm-related problems of the heart are dealt with
by this Department.
Congenital heart defects – Heart defects
present at birth are the most common in heart
conditions in children.
Cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons,
anesthesiologists and other specialists work closely
together to care for such patients.
A wide variety of pediatric cardiac surgical
procedures have been done including operations on
simple congenital lesions such as atrial septal
defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus
arteriosus, coarctations of aorta and Tetralogy of
Fallot corrections and more complex procedures such
as Glenn and Fontan procedures and Sennings and
arterial switches. Patients with atrial septal
defects and patent ductus arteriosus are evaluated
and assessed for closure by device thereby avoiding
surgery.
