Centre of Orthopedics
- Apollo Hospitals Chennai
The Centre of Orthopaedics at Apollo Hospitals
Chennai provides state of the art management of all
disorders of the bones and joints. It is equipped with
sophisticated equipment to facilitate the latest
surgeries including: Trauma, Complicated Joint Replacements, Microsurgeries,
Spine Surgeries & Spine Arthroplasties, Deformity
Correction of Spine and Limbs, Minimal-Access
Orthopaedic Procedures and Image-Guided Studies. The
fully-equipped and advanced operating theatres and
facilities enable excellent perioperative care. The
Centre is supported by a full-fledged
rehabilitation team. It is considered one of the best in
the country with the most competent medical
professionals who use the most advanced techniques
like Illizarov, Oganeysan, Joshi and AO. Primary care
of poly traumatized patients, treatment of fractures
(closed and open) and treatment of supra condylar
fractures of humerus and treatment by pin traction
are also available.
The Hospital also offers the Birmingham Hip
Resurfacing Procedure, the first of its kind in
South East Asia. This treatment procedure has a high
success rate of 99% and has proved extremely
beneficial for patients suffering from secondary
arthritis.
The Orthopaedics Centre also has a Shoulder
Surgery Unit, which is modelled on the Upper Limb
Surgery unit in Liverpool, England. This is the
first dedicated Shoulder Surgery unit in South
India. This unit provides day care facilities for
all keyhole shoulder surgeries, performs shoulder
surgery under regional block without general
anaesthesia and also offers shoulder physiotherapy
services.
Scoliosis surgery, limb lengthening, surgery for
poliomyelitis, spine surgery for lumbar disc
prolapse and spinal fusion for spondylolisthesis and
many other such facilities are also extended by the
Centre.
Joint Replacements:
This unit is designed and
equipped with well trained personnel to ensure
optimal care. Primary total hip, total knee and
shoulder replacements are routinely performed. We
specialise in revision knee and hip replacement
surgeries including salvage of infected joints in
stages and complex primary reconstructions following
old displaced fractures and congenital hip deformities. Minimally invasive hip replacements are
performed in select cases. The other specialized
procedures performed include the unicondylar knee
replacements through minimal access, acetabular and
pelvic osteotomies in children, and various
corrective procedures in the young arthritics.
Concurrent medical treatment and rehabilitation is
made available with experienced physical therapists
and rhuematologists.

Birmingham Hip replacement procedures:
The traditional Total Hip Replacements (THR),
invariably have a 'metal on plastic' bearing. These
are reasonably successful in elderly relatively
inactive patients, but offer unacceptably poor long
term outcomes for young, active patients often with
unavoidable multiple revision surgeries and
associated complications. It is to avoid this
unfortunate sequence of events that Birmingham Hip
Resurfacing (BHR) was developed.

and neck disorders, spinal tumors, infections and
injuries.

deformity corrections, Lowback, Disc prolapse, Spine
