The Critical Care Unit at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, is a multidisciplinary unit where patients with medical, cardiac or surgical problems are managed. The primary goal of the CCU is to provide high quality care to patients with critical illness. The CCU functions as a 'semi-closed' unit, where patients may be admitted by any member of the medical staff with admitting privileges, but consultation is routinely provided by members of the Critical Care Consultants Group (CCCG). Members of the Critical Care team closely communicate with the primary consultants and provide appropriate care.
There is also great focus on training since Critical Care is evolving as a super-speciality and currently there is an ongoing need for trained intensivists. The Critical Care Unit at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, has 74 beds. Patients with Cardiac, Medical, Surgical, Paediatric and Neurological disorders needing intensive care, are admitted in this unit.
The Critical Care Unit is demarcated into the following areas-
- Medical and Surgical CCU
- Cardiac and Cardio thoracic CCU
There are 19 beds exclusively for Cardiac patients, including patients with Myocardial infarction, Acute coronary angina, Acute Pulmonary Oedema, Post Cath and Post PTCA.
- Pediatric CCU
- Neuro CCU
- High Dependency Unit
The unit is well equipped with Dialysis facilities in 9 rooms. The patients Haemodynamics can be constantly monitored by means of Central monitors placed in the nurses' station, where the patients' records can be viewed on the screen.
